Question on Linux (Ubuntu)?

Currently I am using Windows XP, but I've downloaded from Ubuntu. So I want to know about ubuntu. 1) Most of my PC hardware, such as a recordable DVD is made for Windows XP. I know because in the field resulting material (Designed for Windows XP) sticker. So I use this hardware, if I can install Ubuntu? 2) I can install the software that is compatible with Windows to Ubuntu?
