How to install tar.gz files in Ubuntu?

currently I am a brand new Linux user. I am used to double clicking .exe files in Windows. I just installed Ubuntu 7.04. Everytime that i try this command tar -xvzf Overglossed.tar.gz i get this error message? Overglossed.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

what does this means or what else should i try? Please help. Thanks.

Installing from tar.gz is always hard. Use the package manager.

It is in Applications>Add Remove

or System>Administration>Synaptic.

That would be just check the applications you want and click “Apply”. It will download and install it for you.
